Why would you use a template web design?
Author: Wesley Groves, BS, MHA

There is a growing trend within the Web development community to use templates to supplement in-house creative talent (or lack thereof). Templates are useful to individuals who wish to design their own Web site and have little or no design experience. However, the use of templates by Web development companies ensures that you have a design that looks just like someone else's Web site. While some Web designers openly advertise the use of templates others imply that they provide custom design services. Some designers even use templates for their own Web presence. For example take a look at http://www.bluegelmedia.com. This is a fairly nice site, but notice how their own site as well as their custom designs seem to resemble the templates found at http://www.besttemplates.net which is the source of the templates they sell on their site.

Why should I care if a template is used?

Most Web site owners want their site to be unique, creative, drive business and captivate users. High quality templates will give a certain level of creativity, but are literally sold to hundreds of users. While the chance of a user stumbling across the same template is quite low, it isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

Another note about template sites is that they tend to look the same. It is something about the type graphics or the images selected or maybe the color schemes... Take a look for yourself – http://www.templatemonster.com.

Template sites never quite target your market. They are produced in generalized terms and therefore cannot address your specific needs. Only a custom solution can be truly unique, creative and address your needs.

How do I know if I am being presented templates?

In discussions with one of our present clients, we discovered that another company that bid on the project offered three mockup designs within the initial proposal for the project. The client was kind enough to let us review the mockups. It was clear that the stock imagery and subject matter was not exactly on target for the market our client was going to target. In addition, these mockups were prepared in a very short time span.

As a consumer, you should ask if the designer uses templates. Also, before you make a decision on a provider, browse several template sites on the Web so that you will become familiar with what a "template" design looks like. After a while, it becomes quite obvious.

Anabasis Solutions does not use templates.
